Portfolio TAW

Welcome to my admission portfolio for the CGA bachelor course at the Animation Workshop in Viborg.

Below you will see a short description of the world I imagined during this portfolio. I wanted to create a solid foundation for many of my characters and create a sort of believable world. The idea spawned from wanting to use the freestyle category of the portfolio solely for monsters. It rarely ends up as you first thought it out though, so it quickly became evident that I had to take a different approach.

I wish you luck in the Far Islands and hope to see you safely returned.

Kind regards,

Max Jarl Christiansen

The Far Islands

In ancient times, there was water.
The Oceans spanned as far as the eye could see. Few dared to hope of better places beyond the rim of the horizon, for of the ships that went there, were never to return or ever be seen again.
Most people believed them to be lost in the smoldering depths of Chul’thal, the Sea of Fire, where the giant of Earth and Flame was keeping the world as is.
Few even dared to hope at all, for the cluster of islands were treacherous and unforgiving. It was such a place children needed not be told stories of monsters to frighten them at night. No, if they wanted to know of monsters, all they needed was to open the doors at night.

The few coastal villages scattered about the Islands were thick with superstition, because they could not afford not to be in such a place.
Most days were dark and cold and you were raised to live a life of constant conflict. Not only did you have to combat the hostile environment, to fend off the harassment and imminent death the creatures of the wilds presented, for just as cruel were the neighboring Islands. With a constant fear of pillages, war and terror, people had grown hard and cold.
Most sought refuge in beliefs in one of the dozen deities, while others often volunteered to sail to the edge of the oceans if not just to escape cruel fate. It was a place ruled by deities and cautionary beliefs. Rather than allying with fellow villages, the Viking people confined themselves in their truths and shunned those of different beliefs.

If you were not from their village, you were not welcome at all.

Enjoy.
